Dylan Page finds himself whitewashing the gruesome reality in Ethiopia.

With over 19 million followers, Dylan Page has built an empire on TikTok by being the platform’s default, everyday anchor. Dubbed “News Daddy” by Gen Z, Page is famous for stripping the heavy journalistic jargon out of global conflicts, tech shifts, and policy changes, serving them up in casual, bite-sized updates recorded straight from his bedroom.

But recently, the aggregator left his bedroom. Page traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, joining a wave of high-profile creators—including streamer iShowSpeed and rapper DDG—landing in the capital.

What was presented to millions of screens as an innocent, vibrant travel vlog immediately triggered a fierce political backlash. For regional analysts, human rights advocates, and diaspora civil society groups, the trip represents something much heavier than a content creator enjoying Ethiopian coffee culture: it is a textbook case of digital authoritarian whitewashing.

The Polished Lens: “Addis Rising”

Guided by prominent local state-aligned content creators like Adonay, Page’s content has highlighted a stunning, hyper-modern vision of Ethiopia’s capital. His videos feature:

  • Barefoot tributes to historic heroes at the brand-new Adwa Victory Memorial.
  • Vibrant, high-energy live streams walking through the massive open-air markets of Merkato.
  • A tour of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, framing the city as an emerging, futuristic African tech hub.

To a Western audience, it is a refreshing break from outdated, negative media stereotypes. But to those who monitor the Horn of Africa, the omissions in this narrative are glaring.

The Harsh Reality Beyond the Corridor

The primary critique aimed at Page is the stark, devastating contrast between the curated tranquility of Addis Ababa and the reality of the rest of the country.

While Page captures synchronized fire-fountain dances in the capital’s new urban parks, regions like Amhara and Oromia remain gripped by intense, volatile conflict, marked by devastating drone strikes, military blockades, and deep humanitarian suffering. Critics argue that by broadcasting an illusion of absolute, nationwide peace and stability, international creators are actively masking a country in profound domestic turmoil.

Furthermore, observers point out the severe double standard regarding freedom of speech. Foreign influencers are granted high-level state security, red-carpet access, and total freedom to live-stream to hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers. Meanwhile, local independent journalists, dissenting voices, and critical media outlets are facing systematic harassment, shuttered operations, and arbitrary detention.

The Myth of the “Clueless Tourist”

The timing of this creator influx is not lost on regional observers. With a high-stakes national election scheduled for June 1, 2026, critics argue these influencer tours are a coordinated public relations strategy by the ruling administration to manufacture global legitimacy and project a false image of democratic stability just before the vote.

This is where Page’s unique brand backfires. Because he explicitly markets himself as an independent global news reporter rather than a lifestyle traveler, regional observers are holding him to a higher professional standard. As one activist open letter noted, you cannot build a career on cutting through media spin, fly into a conflict-strained nation on the eve of a defining election, and then claim you are “just a tourist.”

When a news creator with 19 million followers ignores the reality of political repression and active regional warfare, the silence becomes loud. Whether intentional or not, the “News Daddy” tour has proven that in modern conflict, a polished TikTok vlog can be just as powerful as a traditional state media broadcast.

As digital media eclipses traditional broadcasting, internet creators are no longer just documenting culture—they are being leveraged to shape geopolitical narratives. For independent reporting to mean anything, creators must provide context, or risk becoming the very curtain used to hide the truth.
